Today, I bring you the love story of Julia and Glória. This story features Glória, an entrepreneur, that started her company right when she finished university. One day, when running through the busy streets of Lisbon, she crossed eyes with Julia who was having a coffee on a patio of an old coffee house. In that moment, time seemed to stand still. Glória decided to slow her pace, and join Julia for a drink. And they never stopped having that daily moment ever since. Julia is the calming presence, appreciate every moment of every day kind of girl that Glória needs in her busy life. And Glória is what keeps Julia from flying too close to the sun. This story portrays a same sex elopement in the city of Lisbon, Portugal.
This RED LOVE AFFAIR editorial was such a joy to plan and I couldn't be prouder of the results.
In 2024, it's disheartening that discussions about equality and human rights persist. We're still having some discussions, and there are still people who believe some people have more rights than others. With the political crises we've been facing, specially the one where women's rights such as abortions start to be questioned, it's more urgent than ever to create spaces where everyone is seen, accepted, and celebrated.
As a wedding photographer, showcasing same-sex weddings and diversity on the website is not just a matter of inclusion: it's an acknowledgment of the beautiful spectrum of love and partnership that exists in our world. Recently I had an inquiry where the couple asked me if I was comfortable photographing a LGBTQIA+ couple, and it seemed so odd to me that this is still a question these days. But it is. And the answer might not always be "Of course". So I started to have a look into my social media and website and I noticed that it really is not that diverse as I wish it would be. When couples visit a wedding photographer's website, they should see themselves reflected in the portfolio. How could I send the message that "everyone's welcome here" when my website was not a reflection of it? This representation is crucial for LGBTQ+ couples who may have faced discrimination or invisibility in other spaces.
For this editorial, I also tried to break any gender role norm that would be expected of a bride, and decided to have both brides wearing suits. In today's wedding landscape, the importance of brides embracing non-traditional roles and wearing whatever they want cannot be overstated. Every bride is unique, with her own sense of style, personality, and identity. By choosing to wear whatever they want, brides can authentically express themselves on their wedding day. Whether it's a colorful gown, a sleek pantsuit, or even a non-traditional ensemble inspired by their cultural heritage, embracing individuality allows brides to shine in a way that feels true to who they are. The decision to break away from traditional bridal attire is a powerful assertion of agency and self-determination. It sends a message that brides are not confined by societal expectations or outdated norms. Instead, they are empowered to make choices that reflect their personal values, preferences, and comfort levels. This sense of empowerment extends beyond fashion choices and permeates every aspect of the wedding planning process. Embracing non-traditional bridal attire is also a step towards greater inclusivity and representation within the wedding industry. By showcasing a diverse range of styles, body types, and identities, brides pave the way for others to see themselves reflected in bridal narratives. This inclusive approach challenges the narrow beauty standards perpetuated by the industry and celebrates the beauty of diversity in all its forms. At its core, a wedding is a celebration of love and commitment between two people. By embracing non-traditional roles and attire, brides reaffirm that love knows no bounds and can't be confined by convention. Whether they're part of a same-sex couple, a non-binary individual, or simply someone who dares to defy expectations, these brides remind us that love is beautiful in all its forms.
THE RED LOVE AFFAIR is a statement of authenticity, empowerment, inclusivity, and love - a celebration of individuality and to the ever-evolving nature of the wedding industry in today's world.
Gloria was inspired a lot by Sofia Vergara and her role in both Modern Family but also in Griselda, the new Netflix show that portrays the life of Griselda Blanco, a Colombian drug lord. (Who- If you're a Narcos fan - I highly recommend watching). Julia was also inspired in the Modern Family characters, and the relationship between the two of them is also a reference to the "Pritchetts vs. Dreamers: Punkin Chunkin Thanksgiving" episode scene.
The imagery of this editorial was also very inspired by the Disney + show, Cristóbal Balenciaga.
