Weddings are always special, but every now and then, you get to witness something truly extraordinary—like Joana and Diogo’s surprise wedding. What was supposed to be a beautiful christening for their two daughters, Alice and Olivia, turned into one of the most emotional and heart-warming weddings I’ve ever been a part of. The joy, the tears, and the love that filled Quinta dos Machados on that day were simply unforgettable.
A história por detrás da surpresa
Joana and Diogo have been together since high school, and their love story is nothing short of a fairytale. Having already built a life together and welcoming their two beautiful daughters, they decided it was time to make it official in the most surprising way possible. Originally, the plan was to baptize Alice and Olivia, but a few months before the event, I received a text from Joana and Diogo that changed everything. They asked me, “Can you keep a secret?” and shared their brilliant idea of turning the christening into a surprise wedding. I was thrilled, a bit nervous, and incredibly honored to be in on such a beautiful secret.
A manhã da surpresa
O dia começou calmo, pelo menos tão calmo quanto é possível com duas bebés. A Joana e o Diogo arranjaram-se juntos, numa manhã em que partilhavam risos e olhares que revelavam a excitação que sentiam horas antes de desvendar este segredo. A Joana, num conjunto imaginado pela própria, linda como sempre. O cabelo e a maquilhagem ficaram ao encargo da talentosa Inês Plácido, que não só tem a melhor irmã do mundo, que por acaso é também uma fotógrafa de casamento muito divertida (hehe), como é uma maquilhadora de mão cheia, que conseguiu enaltecer a beleza natural da Joana. O ramo foi feito pela Joana e era o detalhe perfeito para completar o look. Foi uma manhã cheia de amor, antecipação e algumas lágrimas de emoção.
A grande revelação
Os convidados começaram a chegar à igreja, preparados para assistir ao batizado. A igreja escolhida era muito bonita, com uma paisagem envolvente que reflete a elegância e o charme por que este casal já é conhecido. Estava tudo perfeitamente alinhado para o batizado da Alice e da Olívia, mas assim que os convidados viram a Joana chegar num lindo vestido branco, a segurar o seu bouquet, de braço dado com o Diogo, charmoso como sempre, a surpresa estava exposta. A igreja encheu-se de sons de surpresa, seguidos de risos e excitação à medida que a grande verdade ganhava cor: estávamos num casamento surpresa! Aplausos e lágrimas de felicidade encheram aquela sala. Foi um momento mágico, e que acredito que nenhum dos presentes alguma vez irá esquecer.
A cerimónia
The ceremony was intimate and full of emotion. It was clear that Joana and Diogo's love had grown and deepened over the years, and now, surrounded by their closest family and friends, they were making the ultimate commitment. The atmosphere in the church was electric, everyone was caught up in the emotion of the moment, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. As their photographer, it was an incredible honour to capture every tear, smile, and laugh. Every shot was filled with raw emotion, from the quiet moments before the ceremony to the exuberant celebrations afterward. It’s rare to witness such pure, unfiltered joy, and I found myself crying right along with the guests.
A celebração na Quinta dos Machados
Depois de uma cerimónia muito emotiva, todos fizeram caminho até à Quinta dos Machados para a festa. Quando chegavam à quinta, os convidados eram recebidos por um cenário exuberante saída de um episódio de Bridgerton. A decoração ficou ao encargo da It's Time, num setup que refletia a elegância dos arranjos florais e da decoração de mesa, e um ambiente outdoor que capturava a essência característica desse período romântico da série. Foi o cenário perfeito para a tarde desta celebração.
The lunch was held outdoors, where guests enjoyed a fun, relaxed atmosphere under the warm sun. The laughter and joy were palpable, creating a beautiful contrast to the tearful surprise earlier in the church. And then, as the meal was winding down, Diogo delivered one of his iconic speeches. Known for his heartfelt words, Diogo didn’t disappoint—his speech was both moving and sincere, leaving every single person in tears, as usual. It was a fitting end to a day filled with love, surprises, and unforgettable memories.

The work of Inês Plácido in enhancing Joana’s natural glow, and Joana's own careful planning of her outfit, made everything come together flawlessly.
