What was supposed to be a beautiful christening for their two daughters, Alice and Olivia, turned into one of the most emotional and heart-warming weddings I’ve ever been a part of. The joy, the tears, and the love that filled Quinta dos Machados on that day were simply unforgettable.
The Story Behind the Surprise
Joana and Diogo have been together since high school, and their love story is nothing short of a fairytale. Having already built a life together and welcoming their two beautiful daughters, they decided it was time to make it official in the most surprising way possible. Originally, the plan was to baptize Alice and Olivia, but a few months before the event, I received a text from Joana and Diogo that changed everything. They asked me, “Can you keep a secret?” and shared their brilliant idea of turning the christening into a surprise wedding. I was thrilled, a bit nervous, and incredibly honored to be in on such a beautiful secret.
The Morning of the Surprise
The day started slowly, as slow as any morning can be with a toddler and a baby in tow. Joana and Diogo got ready together, sharing laughs and excited glances as they prepared for the big reveal. Joana, in her carefully curated bridal outfit, looked stunning. The hair and makeup, done by the talented Inês Plácido, who not only has the best sister in the world that is also a great and very fun wedding photographer (wink wink), but also a great makeup artist who highlighted Joana's natural beauty and calm excitement. The bouquet, lovingly made by Joana herself, was the perfect finishing touch to her look. It was a morning filled with love, anticipation, and a few happy tears.
The Big Reveal
As guests began arriving at the church, they were expecting a christening. The church was a very beautiful venue with an amazing background, reflecting the elegance and charm that Joana and Diogo are known for. Everything seemed perfectly set for the christening of Alice and Olivia but as soon as they saw Joana in a stunning white dress, holding a beautiful bouquet and Diogo looking dapper as ever, the surprise was unveiled. The church echoed with gasps of surprise, followed by laughs and delight as the truth became clear: this was not just a christening, it was a surprise wedding! Cheers and tears of happiness filled the room. It was a moment of pure magic that no one would ever forget.
The Ceremony
The ceremony was intimate and full of emotion. It was clear that Joana and Diogo's love had grown and deepened over the years, and now, surrounded by their closest family and friends, they were making the ultimate commitment. The atmosphere in the church was electric, everyone was caught up in the emotion of the moment, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. As their photographer, it was an incredible honour to capture every tear, smile, and laugh. Every shot was filled with raw emotion, from the quiet moments before the ceremony to the exuberant celebrations afterward. It’s rare to witness such pure, unfiltered joy, and I found myself crying right along with the guests.
The Celebration at Quinta dos Machados
After the emotional ceremony, everyone made their way to Quinta dos Machados for the reception. As guests arrived at the venue, they were greeted by an exquisite setup that felt like stepping into a scene from Bridgerton. The decor, meticulously arranged by It's Time, featured elegant floral arrangements, charming table settings, and a serene outdoor ambiance that perfectly captured the essence of a romantic period drama. It was the ideal setting for an afternoon of celebration.
The lunch was held outdoors, where guests enjoyed a fun, relaxed atmosphere under the warm sun. The laughter and joy were palpable, creating a beautiful contrast to the tearful surprise earlier in the church. And then, as the meal was winding down, Diogo delivered one of his iconic speeches. Known for his heartfelt words, Diogo didn’t disappoint—his speech was both moving and sincere, leaving every single person in tears, as usual. It was a fitting end to a day filled with love, surprises, and unforgettable memories.
